The Promises of God

I went up to Vancouver this weekend to see a good friend of mine who was visiting the city. I was really excited to see her but truth be told, I wish it was a different weekend. As I was driving up on Saturday morning, I had the heaviest feeling on my heart. The outcome of this whole ex-roommate situation could potentially be determined and settled this weekend. With the outcome not necessarily being in our favor.

I left it in my roommate's hands. I had met my wits and grace's end but I couldn't help but feel that this was my responsibility as well and I should stay at home and stand by my roommate. The whole time up in Vancouver, I kept thinking about what might be happening at home. I couldn't sleep on Saturday night and woke up early Sunday morning without being able to fall back asleep. A lot was going through my mind. I knelt in prayer that morning, not knowing what to ask but simply telling the Father that I wanted to surrender this into his hands, that I didn't want to worry about this but to have faith in knowing he will take care and have his hand in this situation and watch over my roommate. As I was driving back down to Seattle, the heaviness in my heart increased. It felt like another anxiety attack was coming on. I haven't had one of those in quite a while. It was dusk as I was driving down, there were still a few dark clouds in the sky as it had rain earlier that day and seemed to still be raining in some parts of the nearby sky. I looked out my side window and there it was: the biggest, most brightest rainbow I had ever seen. At once God's promise in Genesis came to my mind.

"And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth." ~ Genesis 9:12-13

Although the covenant that God was making with Noah here was to never again flood and destroy the earth, it still filled me with enormous assurance. It wasn't assurance in knowing that God will not destroy the earth as He had done in the past but assurance in knowing that God is faithful and just and will keep His promises. I didn't know what had happened at home while I was gone but I knew in my heart that God had heard all of our prayers these past months and that He was in control of the situation. Whatever the outcome, our Father in heaven will take care. The heaviness in my heart was lifted and for the first time in months, I felt a sense of peace and relief. I was moved to tears by this gift from the Creator and in deep gratitude for the One who reached out to comfort me and to touch my heart at a level I would understand. A reminder of His undying love and grace for His broken children.

The rainbow kept with me until the sun went down. I drove the rest of the way home in the dark but my heart was resting in God's light.
