the name game
I remember in grade 9 and 10, our teachers always made us play those stupid name games on the first day of class. The worst one for me was the game where you had to say your name and then a word describing yourself that begins with the first letter of your name. I played that game in almost every class and it wasn't just in school but at camps, conferences, swimming class, the list goes on. Why do people like this game so much? It was such a dumb game and I could never think of any words that described me beginning with O.
What characteristics begin with O? The first words that always came to mind was obnoxious or odd! haha, but that doesn't describe me...at least I wasn't going to relate those with my name. I don't want to be remembered as Obnoxious or Odd O! My friend Shelby always shouted out outrageous or offbeat whenever I was at a loss for words...but those didn't describe me. My smarty-pants Princeton friend suggested obstinate or opulent. I went home to check the dictionary afterwards. haha! and those definitely do not describe me but I wouldn't mind being those things ;)
I know it was just a game but if the game does what it was meant to do, then this is how people are going to remember me for the rest of high school so I wanted it to be a good association. I remember going through the entire O section of my dictionary and looking for words that described me. I came up with two: organized and out-going. I chose out-going...organized made me sound nerdy which I was but lets not tell everyone that :P
Lately a new O-word keeps appearing in my life, Obedience.
Within the last 3 months, I've had at least 4 sermons on obedience and somehow, this word always found ways to come up in my conversations. This has been something I've been intentionally trying to be for the past few years, to be obedient to my heavenly father and even my own parents but it's quite odd that it has suddenly come up so much just within these past few months.
I know God is teaching me something...I had a revelation a few weeks back that perhaps, my perspective on obedience has been a little skewd and I need to change. I'm trying to wrap my head around all of this but it's really inchoate. In due time I guess...
It would definitely be geeky if I was remembered as obedient O in high school but it's something I would want my Creator to remember me by. It would be so awesome to be at my journey's end, when I see my Saviour face to face and have him smile and say to me, I remember you, you're Obedient O! Ahaha, that sounds kinda funny but I like it.
